This is a review of the results of research into the fear of crime victimization and actual crime victimization among Swedish gays and lesbians.
Abstract
Using victim survey data, this study looked at the relationship between homosexuality and crime victimization rates and crime victimization fears among a sample of gays and lesbians living in and around Stockholm. The author compared data collected from both victimized and non-victimized subjects. Based upon the data collected, the author found an increased crime victimization risk in the gay and lesbian population and a relationship between the subject’s openness regarding their sexual orientation and lifestyle choices to the increased victimization risk. These results are consistent with traditional victimological patterns. In contrast, the subjects did not experience gender related differences in victimization fear. However, both this study and related American research discussed within this paper, showed that homosexual males have a higher rate of victimization than do homosexual females. 4 figures, 49 references
