This article offers an overview of the development of the discipline of victimology. In particular, it focuses on the concept of victim and on the historical facts surrounding survival and the issues of collective versus individual responsibility.
Abstract
The article also examines the new perspectives opened by victimological research; the limitations and risks of such research and the results of victimization surveys. A section of the article is dedicated to the discussion of the concept of victim precipitation. Finally, the conclusion examines how victimology can be useful in redressing the balance of the justice system in favor of the neglected and overlooked victims without necessarily negating the gains and advances of recent years in favor of suspects, defendants, and convicts.
