Abstract
THIS THE FIFTH IN A FIVE-PART SERIES OF PUBLICATIONS CONTAINING THE MAJOR ENGLISH LANGUAGE PAPERS PRESENTED AND DISCUSSED AT THE FIRST INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON VICTIMOLOGY, HELD IN JERUSALEM IN 1973. THE READINGS IN THIS VOLUME, MOST OF WHICH DEAL WITH THE SOCIOPSYCHOLOGICAL STATES OF MIND OF THE OFFENDER AND THE VICTIM, ARE PRESENTED IN FOUR MAJOR SECTIONS. 'PART ONE: SEX OFFENSES,' PRESENTS STUDIES OF THE VICTIM-OFFENDER RELATIONSHIP IN RAPE AND OTHER SEX OFFENSES. 'PART TWO: WHITE COLLAR CRIME,' DISCUSSES VICTIMIZATION PATTERNS IN WHITE-COLLAR CRIMES AND OUTLINES A DEVELOPMENTAL THEORY OF PETTY THEFT. A NEW WORD, 'OVAVO,' IS COINED TO EMPHASIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF THE EXCHANGE AND RELATEDNESS OF THE ELEMENTS OF OFFENDER (O), VICTIM (V), AND THE ACT (A) COMMITTED. A THIRD PAPER IN THIS SECTION DESCRIBES AND ANALYZES DIFFERENT TYPES OF VICTIMIZATION AMONG THE IGBO PEOPLE OF NIGERIA. THREE PAPERS IN 'PART THREE: INSTITUTIONAL VICTIMIZATION,' FOCUS ON THE COMPLEX WEB OF RELATIONSHIPS THAT EXIST IN 'TOTAL INSTITUTIONS' AND ANALYZE THE PATTERNS OF RECIPROCAL EXPLOITATION AND VICTIMIZATION THAT TAKE PLACE BETWEEN INMATES AND STAFF, STAFF AND INMATES, AND AMONG THE INMATES THEMSELVES. HIGHLIGHTED ARE STUDY FINDINGS ON VICTIMIZATION IN A JUVENILE INSTITUTION AND THE VICTIMIZATION OF CONVICTED ADULT OFFENDERS IN TERMS OF THE GRANTING OF PAROLES BY PAROLE BOARDS. 'PART FOUR: TRAFFIC OFFENSES,' DEALS WITH THE FACT THAT THE OFFENDER-VICTIM RELATIONSHIP IN UNINTENTIONAL OFFENSES IS NOT EASY TO DETERMINE. TRAFFICE OFFENSES ARE EXAMINED TO ILLUSTRATE THE COMPLEXITIES OF THIS RELATIONSHIP, INCLUDING CONTRADICTIONS WHICH MAY APPEAR TO EXIST BETWEEN THE LEGAL AND THE CRIMINOLOGICAL POINTS OF VIEW.
