Abstract
The first chapter examines the scope of victimology by considering the victim throughout history, the re-emergence of the victim, empirical studies of victim precipitation, general victimology, critical victimology, and the victim movement. The second chapter deals with gauging the extent of criminal victimization and includes discussions on Uniform Crime Reports, victimization surveys, the National Crime Victimization Survey, and repeat victimization. The third chapter covers victimization costs and consequences and notes victim-witness management projects. The fourth chapter discusses the importance of addressing the needs of victims, and particular attention is paid to offender restitution, civil litigation, private insurance, and victim compensation. Subsequent chapters are concerned with sexual assault, spouse abuse, child maltreatment, elder abuse, homicide, and victim rights. References, tables, and figures
