This leaflet explains what Embassies, High Commissions of consulates can do to assist victims of crimes overseas.
Abstract
The leaflet outlines the examples of what services can be provided to victims of overseas crimes. General information for victims of any crime include: the Embassies will provide a replacement passport; information on transferring money; contacting family and friends, finding appropriate help for rape or serious assault victims, provide details about lawyers, interpreters, doctors, and funeral directors; and information on police, legal systems and additional information. The leaflet also discusses in detail the numerous things that the Embassies cannot do for travelers these include: the Embassies can not get you out of prison, prevent the local authorities from deporting you, or interfere in criminal or civil court proceedings; give you legal advise, investigate crimes or missing people, get one better treatment in hospital or prison than is given to local people; or pay any bills or give money. Additional information is discussed and contact information is also provided.
