This report, prepared for the Seventh United Nations Congress on the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders, focuses on women as victims of crimes that are committed against them because of their gender.
Abstract
These types of victimization include domestic violence, sexual abuse, exploitation of prostitution and trafficking in women, abuses of economic power involving women, and abuses of political power involving women. The primary factors contributing to the victimization of women include gender, inequality, and the division of labor, in which women perform one-third of the world's formal labor and 80 percent of its informal labor, while receiving only 10 percent of global income and owning 1 percent of global property. The First United Nations Survey on the Situation of Women and the Administration of Criminal Justice Systems covered the period between 1970 and 1982, focusing on female victimization, victim support, and exploitation. Policy implications are discussed in terms of redress and assistance for female victims, treatment of offenders, and prevention. 1 appendix, 1 table, and 1 figure
