In a question-answer format this guide provides victims of crime with pertinent information on the Canadian Criminal Justice System ranging from law enforcement, courts, corrections, and victim services.
Abstract
Prepared by the Canadian Resource Center for Victims of Crime, this report is a victim’s guide, in a question-answer format, to the Canadian Criminal Justice System. The purpose of this guide is to alleviate some of the concerns that victims of crime face with respect to the criminal justice system. The guide was prepared by compiling the experiences of victims and utilizing their knowledge of the criminal justice process. The guide covers many aspects of the criminal justice system including: law enforcement, court system, corrections, and victim services. Twenty specific issues of interest and concern are presented with several questions posed for each and answers. These specific issues include: (1) what happens once someone had become a victim of crime; (2) police procedures; (3) before the trial; (4) victim’s role during trial; (5) the trial itself; (6) media coverage; (7) witnesses; (8) victim services; (9) court decisions; (10) sentencing; (11) appeals; (12) after sentencing; (13) prisons; (14) probation and parole system; (15) young offenders; (16) civil litigation; (17) legal aid; (18) restorative justice; (19) peace bonds; and (20) families of murder victims.
