Annotation

These two volumes explain the data collection method, data content, and coding information for a set of data collected to examine the needs of victims and the responses of local victim assistance programs in four metropolitan areas: Evanston, Ill., Rochester, N.Y., Pima County (Ariz.), and Fayette County (Ky.).

Abstract

The research focused on detail on four questions: what are the needs of victims, where do they seek help, what kinds of help do they receive, and which of their problems do and do not get solved. Variables include demographic information such as city of residence, length of residence, birth date, marital status, race, work status, education, and income; information on the crime itself, such as type of crime, when the crime happened, and details of the attack and attacker; and the consequences of the crime, such as resulting problems, emotional responses, and behavioral reactions. Information was also gathered on victims' needs, including the kinds of needs, whether the victim assistance programs met those needs, whether friends and family helped meet those needs, whether any other groups or agencies met those needs, and whether or not the need was met in some way.
