This guide is for police training sessions that use the video entitled "Law Enforcement Custody of Juveniles," which illustrates the handling of juveniles within law enforcement facilities in a manner consistent with current standards of law enforcement professionalism and the Federal Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act (JJDP).
Abstract
The video and guide are designed to inform and train police officers in making custody decisions that involve juveniles. The video has four scenarios that involve officers interacting with juveniles. In rural, urban, and suburban settings, two scenarios deal with status offenders and two with delinquents. Each is followed by narration that discusses the key points of the handling and custody decisions made by the officers. In this training manual, the scenarios have been grouped in two parts¦the first for status offenders and the second for delinquents. Each begins with a list of objectives, brief descriptions of the scenarios, key points, "what if's" (hypothetical variations on the scenario with accompanying solutions), supplementary information that elaborates on practices and programs mentioned in the scenarios, and guidelines for structuring a training discussion. The video provides a stopping point after Part I to allow time for a discussion on the custody of status offenders before proceeding to the next section on the custody of delinquents.
