School teachers, principals, counselors, administrators, and security aides must work together to control vandalism and violence in Hawaii's schools.
Abstract
A more open atmosphere of information and communication is needed within single school districts to both inform and motivate principles. Successful school management should be measured regularly by a trained staff employing standardized measuring instruments. Principals should be frequently evaluated and the results given priority consideration when promotions and demotions are made. To help principals devote enough time to parent and community relations, a district level public relations specialist may have to be hired. Paperwork should be delegated appropriately to free the principal's time for more important matters. Security aides should receive better pay, training, and job security. Clear and consistent school discipline should be instituted in all schools. The sense of isolation and frustration experienced by the teachers must be eliminated, and counselors must be given adequate clerical support. Sloppy attendance procedures must be rectified to curb the truancy problem. Finally, alternative education programs for some students must be expanded.
