Abstract
Rates are shown according to offender age, gender, and race; offender-victim relationship; and weapon used by the offender. Data for the State, the Rocky Mountain region, and the Nation are compared. Homicide rates in Colorado during the period were below those of the Nation and the region. However, involvement of juveniles aged 15 through 19 tripled from 1988 to 1991. Gang-related homicide and percent of total homicide committed by offenders age 15-19 have followed roughly the same trajectory. Throughout the period, the rates for whites and blacks were lower and roughly parallel to those of the Nation; more homicides were committed by whites, but the rates for blacks were disproportionately high relative to their representation in the population. The proportion of homicides committed with firearms other than handguns increased sharply in the State after 1989, exceeding the national average in 1991. 38 figures, 3 appendixes, 7 references, and 7 endnotes
