This publication provides a summary of a workshop on violence in the family and in the community and describes programs for its prevention.
Abstract
Held in San Diego, Calif., in December 1984, the workshop involved approximately 40 people representing justice, education, and human services. The keynote address examined the relationships between violence and alcohol and drug abuse, school performance and academic achievement, institutional racism, socioeconomic factors, and child abuse. In preventing violence, participants emphasized (1) the need to address social, economic, and environmental factors; (2) the influential role of the family; (3) the influence of cultural attitudes toward violence; (4) the role of inequality in relations between the sexes, classes, and parents and children; and (5) the importance of self-esteem in preventing one's own victimization. Descriptions of eight violence prevention and treatment programs elucidate efforts targeting juvenile delinquency, child abuse, wife battering, chemical dependency, school conflict, and family crisis. 18 references.
