Abstract
THIS BOOK ARGUES THAT THE CRIMINAL IS A PRODUCT OF THE SOCIAL MILIEU AND THAT IT IS THE DUTY OF SOCIETY TO PREVENT AND TREAT CRIME AS THOUGH IT WERE A DISEASE. THE BOOK IS DIVIDED INTO TWO PARTS. THE FIRST DEALS WITH DELINQUENCY AND REHABILITATION AND CONSIDERS SPECIFIC APPROACHES TO CRIME PREVENTION IN RAPIDLY CHANGING SOCIETIES. CONDITIONS IN MODERN INDIA WHICH LEAD TO CRIME, DRUG ADDICTION, AND WOMEN DELINQUENTS ARE DISCUSSED. OPEN PRISONS, NEW DIMENSIONS IN PENOLOGY, PROBATION, PAROLE, OFFENDER AFTERCARE, AND SEX IN PRISONS ARE ALSO CONSIDERED. A BRIEF ANALYSIS OF THE INCREASE IN VIOLENT CRIME AND THE POLICE ROLE IN COMBATING THIS INCREASE IS UNDERTAKEN IN THE SECOND PART. TABULAR DATA REGARDING VIOLENT CRIME IN INDIA AND THE INDUSTRIAL NATIONS OF THE WEST ARE PRESENTED. GROUP, POLITICAL, AND STUDENT VIOLENCE ARE DISCUSSED. EFFORTS BY POLICE ORGANIZATIONS IN INDIA AND WESTERN NATIONS TO PREVENT CRIME AND COMBAT EXISTENT VIOLENT CRIME ARE BRIEFLY REVIEWED.
