These 10 papers examine abuse in a wide range of relationships and include overviews of physical child abuse, child sexual abuse, child neglect, dating violence, wife abuse, husband battering, abuse of male same-sex partners, abuse of female same-sex partners, abuse of elderly persons, and abuse among ethnic minorities.
Abstract
The papers aim to provide an overview of various forms of intimate violence across the life span and to synthesize the literature on the topic. The book uses a family violence perspective. Each chapter presents an historical analysis of the particular type of abuse, legal and operational definitions, and information on the prevalence and incidence of the abuse. The discussion of each form of abuse also includes an analysis of the empirical correlates of the abuse, theoretical explanations of the abuse, profiles of abusers and victims, prevention and treatment strategies, and a discussion of future trends related to the abuse.
