This book documents the extent of violence in schools, hospitals, and public places; considers the causes of violence in these places; and suggests ways to prevent violence and manage the results.
Abstract
Five chapters present a national profile of violence that occurs in schools K-12; colleges and universities; hospitals and clinics; and government offices, courts, post offices, and public places. Particular violent incidents in these places are described, along with the results from surveys and studies. Chapters on factors that contribute to violent behavior and magnify its consequences discuss the behavioral impact of violence on television, the need for gun control, and violent offender profiles. Two chapters on the development of prevention and management plans consider why plans and programs to counter violence are needed, steps in the development of a security plan, and the development of a management plan that will address and mitigate violent situations. The proposed prevention plan is designed to work with potentially violent employees. Training programs and a trauma plan are also discussed. Suggested intervention principles and programs focus on how to change behavior and attitudes that may escalate into or contribute to violence. A summary of plans to prevent violence encompasses action by individuals and groups, action by organizations, a security plan and policies, and a trauma plan. Appended resources and a subject index
