This is the 2016 Annual Report (January - December) of the Violence Reduction Network (VRN), which was established in 2014 as the structured channel through which the agencies of the U.S. Justice Department (DOJ) provide funding and technical assistance to local jurisdictions that need assistance in reducing violent crime.
Abstract
This report reviews VRN's 2016 activities in training, building relationships, strengthening policies, sharing best practices, and working with community members m support of VRN cities' local violent-crime strategies. Some cited examples of this effort in 2016 include Milwaukee, which reported a 14-percent reduction in violent crime from 2015. The focus of the VRN effort was Milwaukee's Center Street Corridor, which is a violent-crime "hot spot" and an identified area for the application of Milwaukee's VRN Strategy. Another example of VRN efforts is Little Rock, Arkansas, where local and federal prosecutors worked with the ATF to prosecute violent gun-crime cases that will remove violent offenders and gang members from the streets. Other examples of VRN efforts are reported for Compton, California; Flint, Michigan; Jackson, Mississippi; Nashville, Tennessee; New Orleans, Louisiana; Newark, New Jersey; St. Louis, Missouri; and West Memphis, Arkansas. One section of this annual report briefly describes VRN federal resource activities for each month of 2016. Where possible online access is provided to various VRN training sessions.
