This curriculum uses the case of an imaginary middle school to allow students to examine the problem of violence by exploring some causes of violence, the people who share responsibility for causing violence, and ways to prevent violence.
Abstract
The nine lessons outlined here give students, working in small groups or with a partner, an opportunity to express their opinion about the causes of violence in the U.S., to reflect on the magnitude of the problem of violence in schools and in the Nation, and to explore ways of learning about violence, i.e., through newspapers and the media, through cultural signs and symbols, and through statistical analysis. The students are encouraged to think of ways to prevent school violence and to create a violence- prevention policy and strategy for the imaginary scenario they have been studying. The curriculum consists of a student workbook and a teacher's guide.
