Workplace violence is examined, based on a review of literature related to violence in corporations and industry, police and corrections, schools and colleges, and health care settings.
Abstract
The review examines the nature and extent of worksite violence, as well as current interventions to facilitate employee responses and recovery from these events. The analysis indicates that worksite violence appears to be widespread. Worksite violence may result in psychological trauma, including post-traumatic stress disorder. The strategies of pre-incident training, stress management, and post-event employee-victim debriefing are of some assistance in reducing the suffering of victims. However, empirical research on worksite violence is needed, as is administrative support for the study and treatment of worksite violence. 64 references (Author abstract modified)
