This book examines strategies and protective devices to prevent robberies and armed hold-ups on commercial premises.
Abstract
This handbook was written with robbery and armed hold-up prevention in large- and medium-sized organizations in mind, although the strategies can be applied to a range of sites and situations. The focus is prevention of homicide and injury - not cash loss - although there is a close overlap. The book includes discussions in a number of areas: (1) characteristics of armed hold-ups and robberies and patterns and incidence of associated violence; (2) what the law requires; (3) crime prevention through environmental design; (4) minimization of risk through target hardening, increasing visibility, and reducing rewards strategies; (5) well-designed cash control strategies; (6) ways to reduce the impact on individuals following an incident; (7) the risk identification, assessment, and control process; (8) legal responsibilities of employers to provide a safe work site and work process; and (9) draft prevention policy and strategy documents and checklists that employers can adopt and adapt to specific on-site conditions.
