This volume provides school counselors, teachers, and administrators with practical principles and guidelines for understanding and providing effective interventions and developing prevention models to deal with aggressive students.
Abstract
The discussion is based on a literature review, pilot and implementation projects, consultations by the authors with schools, and interviews and discussions with colleagues working in schools. The text outlines national trends in violence in schools, describes the factors that place an individual at risk of violent and aggressive behavior, and presents prevention and intervention strategies focused specifically on violence. The first chapter provides an overview of the literature on school violence and discusses general themes related to counselors, teachers, administrators, and students in relation to aggression. The next chapter describes individual factors, peer influences, and family relationships related to juvenile violence; details risk factors that originate and are linked directly to schools and associated communities; and describes violence prevention within schools, larger systems, families, peer groups, and communities. Another chapter describes individual interventions with violent youth, with emphasis on counselor self-awareness, intervention goals, establishment of trust with aggressive youth, and techniques for achieving positive outcomes. Further chapters offer specific intervention principles for work with both individuals and groups; discuss how to establish collaborative efforts in designing and implementing violence prevention programs; and examine counseling issues, including self-disclosure, modeling, self-monitoring, and debriefing.
