Abstract
The overview of domestic violence covers victim profiles, factors in a battered woman's decision about whether or not to leave the home, batterer characteristics, and the long-term effects of domestic violence. The model for a domestic violence intervention system encompasses law enforcement, victim-witness advocacy, prosecution, legal advocacy, judicial participation, batterer education/treatment, probation and parole, and systems coordination. Components of a court-mandated treatment system cover batterer education/treatment programs, the court component, the probation and parole component, the domestic violence program, and community education. An overview of the literature on the efficacy of batterer treatment programs notes that although definitive guidelines for program development are not yet available, some preliminary direction is suggested by the outcome literature. Appended Ohio domestic violence statutes, programmatic forms, and program materials.
