This document presents the information and forms needed to apply for formula grants from the Department of Justice's Office of Justice Programs Corrections Program Office to build or expand correctional facilities and jails to increase the secure confinement space for violent offenders.
Abstract
The program addresses prison overcrowding and the housing of State prisoners in local jails. Half the funds are available for violent offender incarceration grants and half for truth-in-sentencing grants. The funds will be used for space for incarcerating persons convicted of a Part One violent crime or adjudicated delinquents for an act that would be a Part One violent crime if committed by an adult. They will also be used to build or expand jails, correctional facilities on military bases, prison barges, and boot camps and for the confinement of convicted nonviolent offenders and criminal aliens to free existing prison space for confining Part One offenders. States may apply for both grant categories. Approximately $10 billion is authorized for the program from fiscal year 1996 through fiscal year 2000. Forms and instructions
