Proceedings of the 1980 Second Annual Conference of the Virginia Correctional Association are highlighted, with attention given to the conference theme of new trends in the correctional partnership in the 1980's.
Abstract
Emphases of the conference were (1) the need for the public and private sectors to work together in addressing the problems of the criminal justice system, (2) the need for innovative alternatives and the use of untapped resources to provide needed client services, (3) increasing awareness and concern for employee needs and benefits, and (4) a greater use of community resources. Summaries are presented of the presidential address, the keynote addresses at the opening session and the banquet, presentations in the 4 general sessions, and the content of the 19 workshops. The general sessions discussed employee relations management; the courts and private enterprise acting as partners in diversion programs; current legislative issues and trends in corrections at the State and local levels; and the problems, frustrations, and benefits associated with the accreditation process. Some of the workshop topics were hostage situations, the university as a corrections partner, treatment and prevention programs in the 1980's, women's forum, civil liabilities for correctional administrators, overcrowding in corrections, employee sexual harassment, and stress management. Also included are the outgoing president's annual report and lists of the officers and members of the board of directors for 1980 and 1981.
