This report from the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services presents crime trends in the State for the period 2000 through 2009.
Abstract
Highlights from this report include: for the period 2000-2009, violent crime trended downward in both Virginia and the United States, decreasing by 19 percent in Virginia, and by 15 percent in the country; for the past decade, the State's violent crime rate has been below the national rate, and in 2009, it had the seventh lowest crime rate out of the 50 States; for the 10-year period, murder/non-negligent manslaughter decreased by 22 percent in the State, followed by forcible rape down 18 percent, robbery down 14 percent, and aggravated assault down 23 percent; for the period 2000-2009, property crime rates in Virginia decreased by 12 percent, compared to a 16-percent decline in the national rate; and between 2000 and 2009, the drug arrest rate in Virginia increased by almost 13 percent. This report from the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services presents crime trends in the State of Virginia for the period 2000 through 2009. Data for the report were obtained from two sources: the State's Criminal Justice Research Center, and Crime In The United States, a report published by the U.S. Department of Justice Federal Bureau of Investigation.
