RESULTS ARE REPORTED FROM EXIT INTERVIEW QUESTIONNAIRES COMPLETED BY VIRGINIA CORRECTIONS PERSONNEL WHO TERMINATED THEIR EMPLOYMENT DURING A 1-YEAR PERIOD.
Abstract
OF THE 1,112 EMPLOYEES LEAVING THE DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS, ONLY 259 (23 PERCENT) COMPLETED THE QUESTIONNAIRE. FINDINGS SHOW THAT THE PAY RATE WAS THE MOST UNFAVORABLE ASPECT OF EMPLOYEE BENEFITS. THE PREDOMINANT REASONS GIVEN FOR LEAVING WERE A BETTER JOB OPPORTUNITY, LOW SALARY, AND LACK OF ADVANCEMENT OPPORTUNITY. THE POSITIONS MOST VULNERABLE TO TURNOVER WERE THOSE OF CORRECTIONS OFFICER, TRAINING SCHOOL PROJECT SUPERVISOR, PROBATION AND PAROLE COUNSELOR I, AND PROBATION/PAROLE OFFICER. BASED UPON THESE SURVEY RESULTS, THE MEASUREMENT INSTRUMENT SHOULD BE REEXAMINED TO DETERMINE WHETHER IT IS MEASURING THE ITEMS INTENDED. AN EFFORT SHOULD ALSO BE MADE TO ENCOURAGE DEPARTMENTAL UNITS TO PARTICIPATE IN THE EXIT INTERVIEW PROCESS. A SIMILAR SURVEY SHOULD ALSO BE ADMINSTERED TO CURRENTLY EMPLOYED PERSONNEL. OMITTING THE NAME OF THE RESPONDENT FROM THE EXIT INTERVIEW WOULD ENSURE ANONYMITY AND RELIEVE FEARS OF 'BLACKBALLING.' THE APPENDIX CONTAINS A SAMPLE OF THE QUESTIONNAIRE. TABULAR DATA ARE PROVIDED.
