OPERATIONS OF THE VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF STATE POLICE FOR 1977 ARE REPORTED.
Abstract
AVERAGE NUMBER OF POLICE FOR THE YEAR WAS 1,127, WITH A TURNOVER RATE OF 7.01 PERCENT. THE TRAINING FACILITY OPERATED AT PEAK CAPACITY PROVIDING INSERVICE TRAINING FOR BOTH DEPARTMENT AND OUTSIDE AGENCY PERSONNEL. ARRESTS FOR OFFENSES INVOLVING THE HIGHWAYS TOTALED 348,547 OR A TOTAL OF 96.4 PERCENT OF THOSE REPORTED. FINES AND JAIL SENTENCES FOR THE YEAR ARE ALSO GIVEN. TOTAL ACCIDENTS INCREASED 9.9 PERCENT, TRAFFIC INJURIES INCREASED 7.7 PERCENT, AND TRAFFIC FATALITIES INCREASED 11.0 PERCENT IN 1977. ACTIVITIES OF THE CENTRAL CRIMINAL RECORDS EXCHANGE, THE DIVISION OF INVESTIGATIONS, THE CRIMINAL INVESTIGATIONS UNIT, AND THE COMMUNICATIONS DIVISION ARE BRIEFLY SUMMARIZED. MOTOR VEHICLE INSPECTION AND APPROVAL OF AUTOMOBILE SAFETY DEVICES ARE DISCUSSED. MEMBERS OF THE DEPARTMENT HAVE ALSO ENGAGED IN MANY OUTSTANDING LOCAL AND NATIONAL TRAFFIC SAFETY PROMOTION ACTIVITIES. THE DEPARTMENT DID NOT SPEND $907,990 OF THE AVAILABLE $34,156,977.
