This article presents recommendations from the Governor’s Review Panel report in Virginia pertaining to campus emergency safety measures.
Abstract
Among the many recommendations presented by the Governor’s Review Panel, a number focused on emergency planning, campus alerting, police role and training, privacy laws, firearm purchases and possession, emergency message protocols, and critical incident operations. A special review panel convened by Virginia Governor Timothy Kane to study the mass shootings at Virginia Tech University in April of 2007 issued a report with more than 70 recommendations for colleges and universities, mental health providers, law enforcement officials, emergency service providers, lawmakers, and public officials in Virginia and around the country. The Review Panel conducted more than 200 interviews and reviewed thousands of pages of records. This article presents a summary of the many recommendations presented by the Review Panel in the report.
