REPORT ON A PROJECT TO BRIDGE THE GAP IN SERVICES FROM THE EDUCATIONAL FUNCTION OF THE SCHOOLS TO THE FUNCTION OF THE JUVENILE JUSTICE SYSTEM AND PROBATION DEPARTMENT TO PROVIDE SERVICES TO JUVENILE OFFENDERS.
Abstract
A PILOT PROGRAM INVOLVING VOLUNTEERS FROM THE COMMUNITY AND PROBLEMS STUDENTS REFERRED BY THEIR TEACHERS WAS ORGANIZED IN PLACENTIA (CA) TO DEVELOP ALTERNATIVES FOR CHILDREN WHOSE BEHAVIOR PATTERNS INDICATE THAT THEY MAY ENTER THE JUVENILE JUSTICE SYSTEM. THE PROJECT WAS UNDERTAKEN TO REDUCE THE NUMBER OF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS ENTERING THE JUVENILE JUSTICE SYSTEM, PROVIDE ASSISTANCE TO PROBLEM CHILDREN, IMPROVE THEIR ACADEMIC AND SOCIAL ADJUSTMENT BEHAVIORAL PATTERNS, AND INCREASE FAMILY AWARENESS OF PROBLEMS AND THEIR ABILITY TO COPE WITH THEM. COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS PROVIDED ONE-TO-ONE GUIDANCE, COUNSELING, TUTORING, AND FRIENDSHIP THROUGHOUT THE PROJECT PERIOD. AT THE TIME OF THIS REPORT, AN EVALUATION OF THE PROJECT WAS BEING CONDUCTED. PRESS RELEASES AND NEWSPAPER CLIPPINGS DESCRIBING PROGRAM OPERATIONS ARE APPENDED.
