This manual presents legal and practical information for use by female inmates in the District of Columbia Department of Corrections.
Abstract
The information and guidelines are based on a 12-week educational program designed to assist female inmates in interacting with the courts, social services, the correctional system, and each other. The manual is divided into five major sections. The section on dealing with the prison system addresses communication with the outside, sentence computation, religious practice, sexual harassment and sexual abuse, disciplinary reports, and dispute resolution. The section on community transitions focuses on furloughs, escorted trips, the parole process, and halfway houses. The section on maintaining family ties discusses child custody concerns for incarcerated women and the process involved in filing for divorce. The section on health discusses general medical care, pap smears and breast examinations, AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases, pregnancy, and obtaining help for drug addiction and alcoholism. The final section describes community resources, including public benefits, housing, job training referral sources, education and literacy training programs, and drug treatment programs. Checklists and addresses and telephone numbers of community resources
