ARGUMENTS ARE PRESENTED IN FAVOR OF THE ADMISSIBILITY OF VOICEPRINT IDENTIFICATION EVIDENCE: THE AUTHOR CONCLUDES THAT SUCH EVIDENCE 'HAS REACHED THE NECESSARY STANDARD OF SCIENTIFIC ACCEPTANCE AND RELIABILITY.'
Abstract
THIS ARTICLE BRIEFLY EXPLORES EARLY COURT DECISIONS CONCERNING THE USE OF SPEECH SPECTROGRAMS TO IDENTIFY THE HUMAN VOICE AND IT EXAMINES THE EXHAUSTIVE STUDY CONDUCTED BY DR. OSCAR TOSI OF MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY AND THE MICHIGAN STATE POLICE ESTABLISHING THE RELIABILITY OF THE VOICEPRINT TECHNIQUE. THERE IS A SUMMARY OF RECENT COURT DECISIONS AT BOTH THE TRIAL AND APPELLATE LEVELS THAT HAVE OVERWHELMINGLY SUSTAINED THE ADMISSIBILITY OF VOICEPRINT IDENTIFICATION. THE CRITICISMS OF VOICEPRINT IDENTIFICATION ARE EXAMINED AS WELL.
