This document describes the role of volunteers and student interns in the Harris County (Tex.) Juvenile Probation Department and presents background information and guidelines for use by volunteers and interns.
Abstract
Each year approximately 250 volunteers and interns provide more than 30,000 hours of services. Volunteers help the agency at the intake screening level, the intake court level, the field service level, during placement, at the juvenile detention center, at a residential child care facility, and in a community-based institution. Prospective volunteers and interns are screened and receive an orientation. The manual includes an agenda for the orientation, an organizational chart, an overview of the Texas juvenile code, explanations of legal terms for juvenile justice personnel, and guidelines providing suggestions for listening and communication skills and interview questions.
