This article describes a successful police volunteer program in Palo Alto, Calif.
Abstract
The primary aim of the volunteer program was to enhance community interaction with the police department. In addition to achieving that goal, the program also minimized department costs and enhanced the quality and scope of services provided. Volunteers are delegated to staff-supporting and nonhazardous duties determined by the needs of the department supervisors. The duties range from recordkeeping and language translation to security inspections and crime prevention education. Volunteers work 4 to 14 hours per week after orientation and training and are evaluated on a continuing basis.
