THESE 13 APPENDIXES PRESENT FORMS, QUESTIONNAIRES, AND OTHER INFORMATION APPLICABLE TO AN ORIGINAL RESEARCH REPORT ON THE TRAINING OF VOLUNTEER PROBATION OFFICERS IN CANADA.
Abstract
ONE APPENDIX EXAMINES RESEARCH PROCEDURES USED IN THE OTTAWA CRIMINAL COURT VOLUNTEER PROGRAM (OCCVP) TO ESTABLISH AN EFFECTIVE WORKING PARTNERSHIP AMONG RESEARCHERS, VOLUNTEERS, AND PROFESSIONALS. IT RECOMMENDS FIVE GUIDELINES TO BE USED IN THE IMPLEMENTATION OF RESEARCH IN A FIELD OFFICE, INCLUDING NONDISRUPTIVE RESEARCH PROCEDURES DESIGN, CLARITY AND FLEXIBILITY OF RESEARCH PROCEDURES, AND ADEQUATE TIME BUDGETING AND STAFF INPUT INTO RESEARCH IMPLEMENTATION. THE APPENDED RESEARCH MANUAL FOR ASSISTANT PROBATION OFFICERS DISCUSSES THE NEED TO STUDY THE IMPACT OF VOLUNTEERS ON CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROGRAMS. IT EXAMINES POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE ASPECTS OF SUCH RESEARCH PROGRAMS, THE FORMATION OF EXPERIMENTAL AND CONTROL GROUPS, AND THE EVALUATION OF RESULTS. ANOTHER APPENDIX PRESENTS A DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PARTICIPANTS IN THE OCCVP, REVEALING THAT BOTH PROBATIONERS AND PROBATION OFFICERS DIFFER GREATLY IN BACKGROUNDS, COMMUNITY RELATIONSHIPS, AND ATTITUDES AND PERSONALITY. THESE DIFFERENCES HAVE IMPLICATIONS FOR THE PSYCHOMETRIC WORTH OF MEASURES, THE THEORIES OF CRIME UNDERLYING SUCH MEASURES, AND THE NATURE AND QUALITY OF THE SUPERVISORY RELATIONSHIP. OTHER APPENDICES INCLUDE FORMS AND QUESTIONAIRES USED IN THE PROJECT AND A DESCRIPTION OF MEASURES USED BY RESEARCHERS TO ASSESS PROBATION OFFICERS' EFFECTIVENESS.
