A BOOK GIVING PRACTICAL SUGGESTIONS FOR CHANGING CURRENT ATTITUDES TOWARD VOLUNTEERS AND TAPPING THIS SOURCE OF MEANINGFUL, EFFECTIVE AID FOR JUVENILE JUSTICE PROGRAMS IS DESCRIBED.
Abstract
TOO OFTEN JUVENILE JUSTICE PERSONNEL ARE SUSPICIOUS OF VOLUNTEERS, CONSIDER THEM ABLE TO DO ONLY MENIAL CHORES, AND FAIL TO UTILIZE THEIR MANY SKILLS TO FURTHER PROGRAM AIMS. THIS IS SAID TO BE THE REASON WHY CRIMINAL JUSTICE AGENCIES ATTRACT ONLY 1 PERCENT OF THE TOTAL VOLUNTEER POPULATION. THE BOOK DESCRIBED OFFERS PRACTICAL SUGGESTIONS FOR ATTRACTING, TRAINING, AND USING VOLUNTEERS. IT RAISES SUCH CONTROVERSIAL TOPICS AS THE IMPACT OF VOLUNTEERS ON UNION INTERESTS AND REQUIREMENTS OF DUE PROCESS FOR VOLUNTEERS. THE PROS AND CONS OF USING EX-OFFENDERS AND ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED VOLUNTEERS ARE ALSO EXAMINED. AN ORDER BLANK FOR THE BOOK ITSELF IS INCLUDED.
