This collection of 10 articles on volunteers in policing considers police programs to involve youths in law enforcement, citizen patrols, and volunteer police chaplains.
Abstract
The first three papers focus on law enforcement exploring programs for youths, beginning with a review of certification procedures and guidelines for the Ride-Along Program sponsored by the International Association of Chiefs of Police. Also described are a 1981 explorer project in Washington State which collected food for the needy and an incident from the ride-along program in Lansing, Mich. where a volunteer cadet helped a police officer save a life with cardio-pulmonary resusitation. An overview of the comprehensive volunteer program developed by the Colorado Springs, Colo. police details characteristics of volunteers, jobs they perform, management strategies, recruitment practices, training, and expenses incurred in operating a volunteer program. Based on experiences of the Los Angelas police department, another article addresses the role of a volunteer police chaplain and management of such activities. Other programs covered include a successful CB citizen patrol in Park Ridge, Ill., a neighborhood security patrol in Anne Arundel County, Md., and auxilliary citizen units that assist police in handling festival and summer vacationing crowds. The final article examines the 15-year old Teens on Patrol (TOPS) program in Rochester, N.Y. which hires teenagers to patrol the city's recreational areas in the summer. Photographs accompany most articles.
