This overview of programs for inmates in Israeli prisons focuses on a workshop on "critical television watching," parenting education, a Tai Chi program, inmates' right to vote, and the Employment Project.
Abstract
The workshop on critical television watching is part of the 3-month study program offered by the Israeli Prison Service. Workshop topics include the language and content of television; the needs and satisfactions of the television viewer; public service broadcasts, advertising, and electioneering; and news and current affairs. Parenting education, which is for selected inmates, re-examines the attitudes, values, and goals that govern parents' choices in the raising of their children; parents' understanding of child behavior; the influence of the parent's educational method on the behavior and development of the child; and ways of improving mutual relations in the family. The Tai Chi martial arts program is designed to help inmates restrain their aggression. The voting program informs and guides inmates in exercising their right to vote. The Employment Project has three related objectives: finding willing employers, helping prepare inmates for the work experience, and providing support outlets for both inmates and employers, so neither is abandoned to their problems.
