Representatives from the entertainment industry, business, and the community describe programs that use celebrity role models for drug abuse education and prevention.
Abstract
Entertainment industry programs include a celebrity speakers' bureau, conferences, fundraising activities, conferences, outreach programs, and videotapes and television programs that provide information on drug and alcohol abuse and deglamorize substance use. Such programs have involved the efforts of movie and television personalities, writers, producers, directors, and athletes. Business initiatives in this area have included a media campaign using celebrities to emphasize the need for responsible alcohol consumption, an educational program for little leaguers, and a celebrity concert. Others include a training program to help convenience store personnel conduct identification checks of possibly underage alcoholic beverage purchasers, an educational packet mailed to high schools throughout the country, and an educational tape presentation geared to entertainment professionals. Community programs include a conference and workshops for adolescents, a retailer training program, advocacy and fundraising activities undertaken by the California Correctional Peace Officers Association, and a collaborative effort to bring celebrity programs into California Youth Authority institutions.
