For police agencies, the computer revolution has meant dealing with information technology both as users and as law enforcers.
Abstract
The computer industry recognizes the security risks associated with the expansion of computer technology and spends millions of dollars a year testing the vulnerability of computer software to attack. The testing process is an iterative one and takes in all stages of computer software development. For example, Microsoft deploys computer engineers and emergency response teams to manage the threat to its computer networks from hacker or virus attacks. Microsoft's concept of total security encompasses the training of police officers and members of other law enforcement agencies. The company has also worked with the National White Collar Crime Center to provide training courses for police officers from all over the world in computer-related crime investigation. Police departments should realize they are responsible for investigating and prosecuting cybercriminals and they should also recognize they are potential targets of these criminals. 3 figures
