The Washington State Patrol developed this Chemical Hygiene and Safety Plan in order to protect criminal laboratory employees from health hazards associated with chemicals, provide a safe working environment, and ensure that laboratory employees' exposure to substances do not exceed permissible limits.
Abstract
The plan consists of eight main elements: designation of responsible personnel, standard operating procedures, control measures, hood and protective equipment performance, circumstances where prior approval of an operation in required, procedures for handling particularly hazardous substances, provisions for medical consultation and examinations, and employee information and training. The laboratory's chemical hygiene officer is responsible for working with managers and employees to develop and implement appropriate safeguards; monitoring procurement, use, storage, and disposal of chemicals; maintaining appropriate audits; helping managers develop precautions and adequate facilities; knowing current regulations concerning regulated substances; and seeking to improve and annually update this plan. 7 appendixes
