The New Orleans Harbor Police is a full-service police agency with 68 officers responsible for 22 miles of river, canals, and harbors in New Orleans and two adjacent parishes.
Abstract
They are also the revenue agents for the Port of New Orleans. Founded in 1945 as a State police agency, the department originally consisted of four patrol officers who maintained security along the wharves and recorded all vessels that were docked at a wharf or moored in the harbor so the Port Authority would have accurate billing records. Currently, officers are required to make at least one complete tour of the docks and wharves in their beat and log each commercial vessel docked. Officers also respond on board ships to quell disturbances, assist United States Customs Service officers, and handle stowaway calls. Because the harbor Police routinely pass through several residential neighborhoods bordering canals and riverbanks, they are often called by residents for police services normally handled by the New Orleans Police Department. The department has a large fleet of patrol cars and pickup trucks, as well as an expanding flotilla of boats and one foot patrol beat. Photographs
