Abstract
THE EVENTS IN THE PERIOD COVERED GENERALLY RELATE TO FUNDAMENTAL CONSTITUTIONAL ISSUES BEARING UPON THE RIGHTS AND PRIVILEGES OF THE PRESIDENCY. THE EVENTS, WHICH ARE DESCRIBED IN AN OBJECTIVE STYLE, BEGIN WITH JOHN MITCHELL'S TESTIMONY BEFORE THE ERVIN COMMITTEE AND CONCLUDE IN THIS VOLUME WITH NIXON'S FIRING OF SPECIAL PROSECUTOR ARCHIBALD COX, THE SURRENDERING OF THE OVAL OFFICE TAPES TO THE COURT AND THE ERVIN COMMITTEE, AND THE DISCLOSURES AND INVESTIGATION INTO TAPE ERASURES. IN ADDITION TO WATERGATE-RELATED EVENTS, THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF VICE PRESIDENT AGNEW'S RESIGNATION ARE ALSO REPORTED. THE SECOND MAJOR SECTION OF THE VOLUME PRESENTS NEWSPAPER EDITORIAL REACTION TO THE EVENTS REPORTED. DATES AND BRIEF DESCRIPTIONS ARE PRESENTED IN A CHRONOLOGY OF WATERGATE-RELATED EVENTS, BEGINNING WITH THE BURGLARY OF DANIEL ELLBERG'S PSYCHIATRIST'S OFFICE ON SEPTEMBER 4, 1971 AND CONCLUDING WITH JUDGE SIRICA'S UPHOLDING OF NIXON'S CLAIMS OF EXECUTIVE PRIVILEGE ON THREE OF THE SUBPOENAED TAPES. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES ARE PROVIDED FOR THE PRINCIPAL ACTORS IN THE WATERGATE INVESTIGATION. VOLUMES IN THE SERIES ARE NCJ 69004-06. (RCB)
