At the request of a police agency in the region, the director of a regional crime prevention agency in The Netherlands developed a kit of teaching materials on theft, including shoplifting, for presentation in the local schools.
Abstract
The goal was to increase awareness through the use of material that would be morally acceptable without being moralistic as well as to be realistic regarding the Dutch emphasis on alternatives to institutionalization for a first offense of shoplifting. A committee worked for several months to produce a video titled "We Won't Take This." The material was tested in several schools and received positive responses. The teaching package consists of four lessons, each lasting 50 minutes. The first lesson focuses on the nature of theft; the second, on the role of peer pressure and other factors; the third, on scenarios in which youths must decide what to do; and the fourth, on activities chosen by the students. The teaching kit contains a teaching manual, a manual for each student, a video, a game, and a cassette tape with five songs about theft. The lessons conclude with a celebration consisting of both pre-determined and optional elements. A teacher who used the program commented that the program is beneficial and should be included in the curriculum for students ages 13-14 every other year. Map and outlines of lesson plans.
