The FBI Supplemental Homicide Reports for 1977 through 1986 were used to investigate which weapons were used by juvenile and adult children to kill male and female parents and stepparents in single victim, single offender situations.
Abstract
The results showed a difference in weapons selection in male versus female parricide cases. Offenders who killed fathers were more likely to use firearms, while offenders who killed mothers were more likely to use knives or cutting instruments, blunt objects, or personal weapons. Clinically important differences emerged relative to offender age group. Juvenile offenders were more likely than adults to use rifles or shotguns and less likely to use knives or blunt instruments in homicides involving biological parents and stepfathers. Fathers were more likely than mothers to be killed by firearms in homicides committed by both juvenile and adult children. 2 tables and 24 references
