Operation Weed and Seed is a community-based crime prevention program that seeks to make a wide range of public and private sector resources accessible to communities, and four effective weed and seed programs are described.
Abstract
The weed and seed strategy brings together Federal, State, and local crime fighting agencies, as well as social service providers, public and private sector representatives, prosecutors, businesses, and community residents, to weed out violent crime and gang activity and seed the target area with social services and economic revitalization. The weed and seed strategy includes four basic elements--law enforcement, community policing, prevention/intervention/treatment, and neighborhood restoration. Four effective weed and seed programs are described: (1) a program in Ocala, Florida, that focuses on community policing and problem-oriented policing, and drug and gang resistance education; (2) a program in Madison, Wisconsin, that provides a safe place for at risk elementary school children to go after school; (3) a program in Seattle, Washington, that promotes economic development in inner city areas; and (4) a program in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, that includes a comprehensive crime reduction and neighborhood revitalization strategy.
