This issue features several articles focusing on what's working in Federal, State, and local crime prevention initiatives in the areas of law enforcement, prevention, intervention, and treatment, and neighborhood restoration.
Abstract
In the area of law enforcement, programs and initiatives in the area of crime prevention include: (1) the Weed and Seed strategy in the fight against terrorism; (2) the Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS) program designed to provide support and resources for agencies interested in developing a volunteer program; and (3) East Point, Georgia's Youth Alternative Intervention Program (YAIP) addressing the needs of troubled youth through effective and efficient remedies for changing their patterns of delinquent behavior. In the area of prevention, intervention, and treatment, programs and initiatives include: (1) the Drug Education for Youth (DEFY) program, a two-phased prevention program for 9 to 12 year old youth that deters at-risk behaviors; and (2) the success of the Pine Bluff, AR Weed and Seed program. In the area of neighborhood restoration, programs and initiatives include: (1) the Home Ownership Program attributed to the Weed and Seed program of Oklahoma City, OK; (2) the revitalization effort in the Weed and Seed neighborhood of Savannah, GA through training in culinary arts; (3) Operation Clean Sweep in the Weed and Seed area of Corpus Christi, TX; and (4) the neighborhood restoration project in Fountain Square in Indianapolis, IN helps area youth with Youth In Arts projects. In addition to the above featured articles, this issue presents Weed and Seed conference updates and information.
