This edition of Weed & Seed In-Sites presents a series of articles focused on community safety and improvement programs.
Abstract
The first section contains three articles that describe reentry programs. The first article describes the community corrections work undertaken by the Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency (CSOSA) in Washington, D.C. The program provides supervisory and treatment services to over 26,000 offenders on retrial release, probation, and parole and is considered among the best funded community corrections programs in the country. Another article in this section on reentry describes a family reunification program run by the local Weed and Seed and the Mount Moriah Baptist Church, which uses video conferencing to work with offenders. Two articles comprise the section on American Indian/Alaskan Native programs. The first article discusses how the Children’s Safe Place, the first child advocacy center in Indian country, is helping to meet the needs of children and family affected by child abuse. The second article describes technological advances in electronic information sharing among tribal law enforcement. The last section contains four articles on prevention programming. The first article describes a program called SCOOP (Social Celebrations Opportunities Organizations People) in Trenton, New Jersey that uses a bus system to link 13 afterschool centers so that all children have access to activities without being limited by transportation, lack of money, or location. Another article in this section provides 10 tips for improving access to Weed and Seed programming for individuals who do not speak English while a third article describes a video that highlights Safe Haven programs for youths. Contact information is provided for each article.
