DISCUSSION OF A 1972 SURVEY OF 461 POLICE PATROLMEN TO DETERMINE MORALE, JOB SATISFACTION, PROFESSIONAL SELF-IMAGE, AND RELATIONS WITH COLLEAGUES AND SUPERIORS.
Abstract
THE SAMPLE OF OFFICERS REPRESENTED NINE PERCENT OF THE HAMBURG CITY POLICE FORCE. THE 47 MULTIPLE CHOICE AND 15 SHORT-ANSWER QUESTIONS WERE BASED ON ISSUES AND PROBLEMS WHICH RECURRED IN A SERIES OF 50 INTERVIEWS BETWEEN THE AUTHOR AND INDIVIDUAL PATROLMEN PRIOR TO THE SURVEY. RESPONSES TO QUESTIONS CONCERNING JOB SATISFACTION WERE CORRELATED WITH ANSWERS TO THE OTHER QUESTIONS TO INDICATE POSSIBLE CAUSES OF MORALE PROBLEMS. ONE-FOURTH OF THE OFFICERS INDICATED THAT THEY WERE RELATIVELY DISSATISFIED WITH THEIR JOBS. OVER HALF OF THE OFFICERS - INCLUDING 77 PERCENT OF THOSE DISSATISFIED WITH THEIR JOBS - FELT THAT THE MOOD OF DISSATISFACTION AMONG THE POLICE AS A WHOLE WAS RELATIVELY 'EXPLOSIVE'. INCLUDED ARE THE RESULTS OF THE SURVEY AMONG MEMBERS OF SPECIAL TACTICAL POLICE UNITS, COMPARISONS WITH THE RESULTS OF OTHER STUDIES OF THE WEST GERMAN POLICE, AND A DISCUSSION OF THE IMAGE OF THE POLICE AMONG THE WEST GERMAN POPULATION. THE APPENDIX INCLUDES A COPY OF THE SURVEY. --IN GERMAN
