Abstract
More than 6,000 juveniles were admitted to West Virginia juvenile detention centers from 1992 through 1998; 893 were admitted in 1998. This report describes the juveniles, summarizes the offenses charged, and provides an overview of current and projected use of juvenile detention by county. The purpose of the report is to provide criminal justice professionals and policy makers information to facilitate sound policy decisions, ensure fair allocation of resources, and determine more appropriate juvenile and crime intervention measures. Data for this report were obtained from monthly population reports (MPRs) and intake and release forms containing demographic information about juveniles admitted to West Virginia juvenile detention centers. The report presents the following about defenders: gender; age at admission to detention center; social and home factors; adjudication history; and county. The report suggests that data in these tables should be interpreted only as a brief look at the situation in each county, and should be evaluated in conjunction with the individual policies and resources of the counties.
