Abstract
During 1999, West Virginia juvenile probation officers handled 8,421 cases involving 6,811 juvenile offenders. Most juveniles were not detained prior to the disposition of their cases and the majority of juveniles had no prior delinquency or status offense history. Most of the cases in 1999 involved delinquency offenses, with the property offenses of assault and theft being the most frequently charged crimes followed by property damage offenses and drug violations. There were 2,088 juveniles charged with status offenses in 1999, with truancy being the most frequently charged status offense. During 1999, 5,431 delinquency cases were disposed; over two-thirds of status offenses and almost half of all delinquency cases were handled informally by the juvenile justice system. Thirty-one delinquency cases were transferred to adult criminal jurisdiction. Males were overrepresented among delinquent offenders (74.2 percent) and the majority of offenders were White (84.9 percent). Most of the juveniles involved in West Virginia’s juvenile justice system during 1999 resided at home with at least one parent at the time of the offense. Graphs, tables, maps
