Abstract
During 2000, West Virginia juvenile probation officers opened 9,463 cases involving 7,041 juveniles, 69.2 percent of whom were charged with at least 1 delinquency offense. Of the 12,845 offenses committed by juveniles under probation orders, 75.1 percent were delinquency offenses while 24.9 percent were status offenses. Almost 20 percent of all juvenile cases during 2000 involved multiple charges. Roughly half (51.2 percent) of all 8,108 case dispositions during 2000 were resolved informally. According to data on complaint histories, 54.9 percent of juvenile offenders in 2000 had no prior status or delinquency offenses and 85.5 percent of delinquency cases did not involve detention prior to disposition. The average age of delinquent offenders in West Virginia during 2000 was 15.4 years. Just over half of delinquent offenders reported attending mainstream public schools and a full 81.4 percent of delinquent offenders lived with at least one parent at the time of their offense. Rates of juvenile delinquency by county are presented, followed by statistics on type of delinquent offenses committed during 2000. Types of delinquency case dispositions are enumerated followed by information on status offense cases. Tables, figures
